Where to stay in Paris: best Arrondissements to stay in Paris

Facts about the Arc de Triomphe.

If you don’t know it already, Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements named 1st to the 20th; think of them as districts! The bigger the district number, the further away it is from the center of Paris.

For example, the 1st arrondissement which is the Louvre neighborhood is considered to be the city hub while the 20th arrondissement is the furthest away, you may recognize it for being home to the famous Père-Lachaise Cemetery.

Arrondissements like the 7th, 8th, or even the 9th are sometimes confused to be central Paris which is true in a sense but not if you consider it geographically but they’re pretty near the center.

All these arrondissements come with something unique to offer to different types of travelers!

And while they’re many, not all of them are great to stay in because some are a bit far from the places you’ll want to visit or some don’t have easy access to other Parisian landmarks.

With that in mind, I will only be recommending Paris’ arrondissements that I believe are the best to base yourself in while exploring the city of love!

All these neighborhoods make getting around easy and some even harbor the popular landmarks of Paris!

Summary of the best neighborhoods in Paris to stay

Geting an upclose look at the Eiffel Tower from Champs De Mars is one of the things to do in one day in Paris

Short on time and want to know where to stay in Paris without all the details? Here is the summary.

  • 7th arrondissement (Eiffel Tower district): This is where to stay in Paris if you’re visiting the city for the first time or if you want to be a few steps away from the Eiffel tower! This is my favorite budget hotel in the 7th, for mid-range travelers, Jardins Eiffel hotel is perfect and for those who want a touch of luxury, you’ll love J.K. Place Paris Hotel! Want a homey feel instead? This apartment called Résidence Charles Floque will suit your needs!

  • 18th arrondissement (Montmartre): This is the best place to stay in Paris if you’re ona romantic getaway while enjoying the artistic vibe. Book your budget hotel here, this one is great for mid-range travelers, and for a dash of luxury, this hotel speaks your language. Want to even feel more like a local? Then stay at this apartment.

  • 1st arrondissement (Louvre): The Louvre neighborhood is the best area of Paris to stay in if you’re looking for a perfect sightseeing base since it’s close to most of the places you’ll visit while in the city. This is my budget hotel recommendation, this one for mid-range travelers, and for those with an ache for luxury, you’ll appreciate every aspect of this hotel. Alternatively, you can check out my list of the best Parisian hotels near the Louvre. And if you prefer a homey feel, this apartment has everything you’ll need to make that happen.

  • 8th arrondissement (Élysée): Did your Paris itinerary involve going on a shopping spree while still enjoying the views of the Eiffel Tower, then the 8th arrondissement is where to stay in Paris. My main pick for budget travelers is this hotel and this one for a mid-range budget. If budget is not an issue, then you’ll love all the luxuries that come with this hotel. Of course, if you want that home feel even when in a foreign city, this apartment will provide just that.

  • 5th Arrondissement (Latin Quarter): One of the best areas to stay in Paris on a budget is the Latin Quarter. Even if it is a budget area, you will still find something on the lower end and something on the upper end even though there are still considered affordable. This is the cheapest (and highly-rated) hotel in this neighborhood, but if you want a bit more amenities, then this one will suit you but of course, your budget will go slightly higher. For a touch of luxury, you can’t go wrong with this hotel. And if you prefer to make your meals to reduce your overall expenditure, this charming apartment is a great option.

  • 9th arrondissement (Opéra and South Pigalle): For a mix of central, upscale, and cultural stay while throwing in some shopping sprees, the 9th arrondissement is where to stay when in Paris. You can stay at this hotel for a friendly budget, this one if you prefer to stay in the mid-range and for those with a love for everything luxury, you won’t find any fault at this hotel. But if you prefer to stay in Paris while enjoying the home feel, then this is the apartment I recommend.

  • 6th arrondissement (Saint-Germain-des-Pres): If you’re traveling with kids or your entire family, the 6th arrondissement is the best place to stay in Paris. If you want to save a bit more, this budget-friendly hotel will do the trick. For a mid-range stay, I recommend checking out this hotel and for those who want to experience all the luxuries Paris has to offer, this luxury hotel is the ideal stay. But if you want to make meals for the entire family while still creating a homey feel for the kids, this apartment rental will exceed your expectations.

  • 4th arrondissement (Le Marais): For great nightlife, inclusivity, chic and cool atmosphere, you won’t regret choosing the Le Marais neighborhood. You can opt to stay in this budget hotel, this mid-range hotel if you don’t mind paying a bit more for extra amenities but if you don’t want to miss out on the luxuries of this place, then I recommend staying at this hotel. But for people who prefer a homey touch, this apartment is what I recommend.

That was the summary of the best districts to stay in Paris but I am going to give you details of all those places and the best hotels to stay in each of them while including options for all budgets!

On top of that, I’ll suggest a few places to visit and what makes that particular neighborhood a great place to stay in Paris.

Where to stay in Paris for the first time + Near the Eiffel Tower: 7th Arrondissement (Eiffel Tower District)

Paris Captions for Instagram

The 7th arrondissement is truly a beautiful place to stay in Paris and I couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else. Located on the left bank of the Seine, choosing this neighborhood will put you in close proximity to the Eiffel Tower!

Besides the Eiffel Tower, this district is home to some of the other popular attractions like the Les Invalides which is the final resting place of the infamous Napoleon, Champs de Mars which is great for a picnic or cherry blossoms if you visit Paris in spring, Musée d’Orsay, a museum dedicated to Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art and lots of cafes and restaurants!

What makes this place even more ideal is that the metro is very well connected which means that you can easily access other attractions in a few minutes!

Pro of staying in the 7th: The fact that it is a few steps away from the Eiffel Tower makes it worthwhile! Nothing can compete with that in my opinion! You’ll also have access to parks like Champs de Mars and Trocadero.

Con of staying in the 7th: While the place is glamorous, it comes with a higher price tag and it can get a bit crowded! I mean, this is home to one of the most visited landmarks in Europe, so it’s not surprising.

The rooms of this hotel are clean and comfortable and come with a work desk if you want to get some work done during your visit.

Nothing too fancy about it but the great selling point is its location, closeness to the metro, and the availability of breakfast! At this price, this is honestly the best place to stay in Paris for first-time travelers on a budget.

Hôtel Le Beaugency

Another budget hotel in the neighborhood is Hôtel Le Beaugency. Located just 5 minutes from the iron lady, this hotel offers colorful rooms with minimal amenities that are enough to make your stay comfortable.

Some of the rooms even offer a peek at the Eiffel Tower if you’re lucky to get one of those.

Jardins Eiffel

Located on Rue Amelie, Jardins Eiffel offers elegantly designed and soundproof rooms (trust me, Paris can mean to have thin walls)!

Besides the comfortable rooms, friendly staff, and a nice breakfast, this hotel also offers private parking if you choose to come with your car — which I don’t recommend btw but if you still choose to, it’s a nice addition.

One of the highlights of staying at this hotel is that some rooms come with a private balcony which offers impressive views of the Eiffel Tower. How magical is that!

Pro of staying in the 18th: The area is artistic and has a lot of offerings in terms of cafes, things to do, and attractions. Another pro is that Montmatre is still a bit cheaper compared to other areas in Paris when it comes to accommodation.

Con of staying in the 18th: The major drawback about staying in Montmatre is that it is a bit far away from other popular attractions which means that you can’t walk from one attraction to another. You’ll need to take the metro to reach “Central Paris”.

Where To Stay In Paris On a Budget: 5th Arrondissement (Latin Quarter)

Latin Quarter is one of the places to stay in Paris.

While the Latin quarter covers both the 5th and some parts of the 6th arrondissements, for where to stay in Paris on a budget, I suggest opting for the 5th arrondissement.

The area is famously known as a student neighborhood due to the many schools, universities, and institutions it houses.

Being a student area means that it tends to be relatively cheaper but this doesn’t imply that there is nothing else to enjoy in the area.

You can find popular attractions like the Panthéon, Jardin des Plantes, Musée de Cluny, various cinemas, and Square René-Viviani which houses the oldest tree in the city.

Jardin du Luxembourg is also close by in the neighboring 6th arrondissement if you want to enjoy a Parisian picnic.

There is literally anything you can think of in the 5th arrondissement and you can enjoy all this on a budget, at least compared to other parts of Paris.

Pro of staying in the 5th: It is relatively cheaper compared to other Paris arrondissements. Plus, it gives a balance between the authentic local feel of Paris and the touristy while still being near all the famous attractions.

Con of staying in the 5th: It can get a little crowded with young people if you prefer a quieter place.

Where To Stay In Paris For Culture + Shopping: 9th Arrondissement (Opéra and South Pigalle)

The 9th arrondissement is one of the best arrondissements to stay in Paris.

The 9th arrondissement offers the best of both worlds. The upscale, cultural, and lavish life near the Opera neighborhood and the artsy budget-friendly, and hipster life in the South Pigalle (SoPi) neighborhood.

With the fusion of these 2 plus a high shopping culture since the district houses the biggest departmental stores in the city, there is no better place to stay in Paris for cultural, artsy, and shopping, like in the 9th.

Some of the places that make the 9th a contendant when it comes to choosing the best places to stay in Paris include Galeries Lafayette and Printemps Haussmann for shopping, Palais Garnier, Musée de la vie Romantique, Folies Bergère, Grevin Wax Museum and many others.

Pro of staying in the 9th: This arrondissement is very diverse and has a little bit of everything! From museums for history buffs, opera houses and music halls for cultural experiences, and departmental stores for shopping. So you can ultimately enjoy anything you think of in this district. It is also centrally located which makes walking to major landmarks easy. Plus accommodation is generally affordable.

Con of staying in the 9th: There is no real con about the 9th except that it gets a bit touristy, especially in the Opera neighborhood.
