Snow in Paris (Snowy Photos of Paris, Where to Go+ FAQs)

Want to know more about Paris in the snow? This post will show you everything you need to know about snow in Paris from popular FAQs to where to go to see it!

It’s no secret that snow in Paris is rare! It may not be as rare as hens’ teeth (if you’re familiar with that saving) but it’s pretty safe to never expect it to snow.

Regardless, it does snow in Paris and when it does, the city is beautifully wrapped in a white coat and everyone comes out to experience this new outlook on the French capital.

And while the Parisian streets become foggy and take on a different kind of charm, what happens to the roads is a different story! Like any other place, the roads become slippery but since Parisians are generally not used to driving on snow, you may want to pay extra attention when crossing any road.

A Guide to Snow in Paris (Photo Diary +FAQs)

Does it snow in Paris

Champs de mars in snow

Yes, it does snow in Paris but it is incredibly rare! And even if it does, it’s only a few inches and it doesn’t last long too on the ground — it could be around 2-3 days!

The average historical number of days it snows in Paris is about 14 days a year but sometimes it takes even 3 or more years without seeing any snow at all.

When does it snow in Paris?

The common months to see Paris in the snow are between mid-January and mid-March which are the typical winter months! Snow during Christmastime in Paris is also rare so don’t plan to have a white Christmas here!

While these are the typical Paris snow months (even if it’s quite rare), back in 2006, everyone was in shock when it snowed at the end of April!

It wasn’t a lot but definitely not the kind of weather you expect during spring in Paris. Yeah, imagine going egg hunting under snow! (You can read the details of when it snowed in April here.)

With that in mind, it’s safe to say, “never say never” but rather uncommon.

Where to go to See Paris in the snow

While you can just look out of your Parisian apartment or your Parisian hotel to see the snowflakes, there are some places that bring out the true magic of a snowy Paris.

Of course, it’s hard to plan in advance on when to go since it’s never a 100% chance that it will snow, so you’ll need to be very spontaneous! As soon as you see it start to snow, just grab your stuff and get going!

Eiffel Tower and Champs de Mars

Definitely, the Eiffel Tower has to come first on the list! It’s the most iconic landmark in Paris and seeing it and the surrounding champs de mars covered in white snow is a wonder to behold.

Yes, I had to write my name in the snow 🙂

If you want to take stunning photos of the Eiffel Tower in its rarest form, then there is no better place to go than the Trocadero square.

Since it’s directly opposite the iron lady, you’ll get a perfect shot with no obstructions while also including the entire area of the Warsaw fountain.

Snow at the Trocadero

Montmatre

Located in the 18th arrondissement, the entire area of Montmartre turns into a winter wonderland with snowflakes falling on its prettiest streets.

And since this entire neighborhood is less polluted than the center of Paris, snow is more likely to stick on the ground for a bit longer.

Walk along the famous street of Rue de l’Abreuvoir to see how the pink Maison Rose restaurant is blanketed and after that head to the famous Sacré-Coeur Basilica to admire it as it takes on a new look!

Le Consulat restaurant is also a great spot to stop by if you want to take that perfect Instagram Paris snow photo! (Don’t forget to use my Paris Instagram captions or puns about Paris when you do to increase engagement on your photos).

In short, the entire artistic and chic area of Montmartre is great to admire Paris as it snows.

Parc des Buttes Chaumont

While it’s mostly famous for cherry blossom season in Paris, Parc des Buttes Chaumont is also a great place to stop to admire snowy Paris.

Due to its unique features from the waterfalls, and caves to the Temple Sybille, this park becomes a unique masterpiece in winter.

Don’t forget to climb up to the viewpoint at Temple Sybille to take enjoy views of the snowy city.

Pont Alexander III

This is one of my favorite places to go when it snows in Paris! Besides the bridge being beautiful all year round (needless to say, it’s my favorite bridge and one of the cool places to enjoy stunning views of Paris ), during snow, it becomes extra special.

From this point, you’ll be able to see the famous Invalides covered in snow, the roof of the Grand Palais, the golden features on the bridge, and you’ll have a peek at the Eiffel Tower too! It can’t get any more magical than this.

Tuileries Gardens

Snowballs… anyone? On top of the stunning photos you can capture on the promenade in the Tuileries, this park is quite a star when it comes to snowball fights!

Though the snow is rarely much to that extent, if it gets to a level where you can make a snowball, pack your kids, and head to Tuileries next to the Louvre museum! If you have no kids, don’t be afraid to let your inner kid out and enjoy this rare experience in Paris.
